Stuff Fellows Might Need

(when teaching in a school)

  • An introduction. Here are a couple examples:
  • A plan for the first day. Here are a few things to consider:
  • A cart. A great place for demos and carrying the day's materials from class to class.
  • Access to a computer and projector. Some fellows like to show pictures of their labs on the first day, as well as pictures of other interesting things.
  • Work/Prep space. This could be in the teacher's lounge, the back of a classroom, or even a really large closet. Be sure the space is somewhere where it will be the least disturbing to teachers or students.
  • Access to the copier, so the fellow can make copies of handouts.
  • Students' names. The kids can wear name tags for a few days, or class photos or a yearbook for the fellow to study will also work.
  • Teacher/Staff Names. It's nice to know the people who you are going to be working with
  • Medicine/Placebos. Children are disease vectors, so you might want to bring Airborne, Zicam, vitamin C, cough drops, etc. Whatever you need to feel better and still teach.
